Purple Power

Another combination of old and new.  The cross stitch garden scenes are about thirty years old.  They first were individually framed and then sewn together into a hanging...and now have joined the purple power quilt.  The mariner's star was my first attempt.  I am not the most precise person but it was fun to do!

Night Garden

Something totally differnt from my normal.  This quilt started with fans leftovers from Meaghan's quilt made over thirty years ago.  The cross-stitch was also done over thirty years ago and the black background is made from old napkins.  The flowers are a combination of old experiments that never found a home and new ones to fill the space.  A border of new fans and it was a completed project at least...

Music

When wandering down the coast last fall, I found a remnant that had instruments in squares.  I could see a couple of the squares incorporated into quilts I was envisioning, but then I had all the rest.  In the end I just double framed the squares and added an embellishment.  One of the quilts went to a friend of Andi's, the other Andi kept!

Seaside Sun

This is the first of a series of quilts with a lighthouse.  I found a fun pattern on my trip down the coast last fall with lighthouses,  Never one to follow a pattern completely I deconstructed and have used parts in quilts each with a different color scheme.

Rose Garden

I began this quilt in 1996 after a trip to visit Mom and Dad.  I wanted to do a predominantly white quilt, and picked out some fabrics when I was there.

I had just finished the cross stitch roses in the center and thought they would be a nice contrast.

Unfortunately, the quilt didn't go as planned.  I was nearly finished with the piecing, the white area was small pieced hearts, and was just beginning to quilt when I discovered a couple of the fabrics were unraveling.  Discouraged I put the quilt away for many years, eventually replacing the white hearts with white stripes and finishing it in 2014.

Eighteen years after it's beginning it became one of my favorites.  It spends much of the summer on my bed.

Summertime

This is another construction of multiple pieces...the bird is the end result of my week at Asilomar, the three cross stitch pieces have been hanging around for over thirty years, they were framed and had various homes.  The paper-pieced leaf and star, were technique trials.

I finished a few days before the start of summer and as I walked around the house to stretch I found a surprise box from my sister on the porch a wonderful construction of cherry summer plants that so wonderfully filled the empty pot by the front steps!!

CSB - Asilomar

This post covers many of my interests, a state  beach and marine reserve, a lighthouse, a natural preserve, and QUILTS.  It can't be much better than a week immersed by all.

Asilomar is a state beach with a conference center located in Pacific Grove.  I was lucky enough to find a quilt workshop with Empty Spools Seminars. A week with Sandra Leichner provided me with a lot of new techniques for hand applique, and visits to other classrooms provided inspiration for projects to come.
There was even a quilt store in place at the workshop.  The Cotton Patch from Lafayette sets up a store on site to facilitate those last minute needs or desires of workshop attendees. And so my fat quarter stash has grown.

Learning new quilting techniques is great...but I need my steps.  The ability to step out the door and walk to my hearts content made for a wonderful week!  After a quick stop for coffee in the mornings I would walk along the beach for about an hour.  By the end of the week I had chatted with a few of the locals who were also out every day.

Wandering through the grounds are some very tame deer, they don't run when you walk up, the do munch on everything....the reason for the caged flowers in the Dunes Natural Preserve.

Asilomar,  itself was originally a YWCA camp. The original building,  designed in 1913 by Julia Morgan, has been restored and other buildings date back to the WPA era.  Asilomar became a State Park in 1957 and has continued as a conference center with the grounds open to the public.

Point Pinos Lighthouse commissioned in 1855,  is the oldest continuously working lighthouse in the state.   The lighthouse is owned by the city of Pacific Grove.  The Heritage society of Pacific Grove is actively restoring the lighthouse and manning the museum.  It is well worth a visit.

Valentine Hearts

Another early lap quilt.  I think one of my first...made in the days when material was found in the remnant bin at Gemco.  I'm never sure that I love this, not the color choices I'd make today. But then it was what was available and I've lived with it on Valentines day for close to forty years.

Trees

At a quilt show in the foothills, we saw a red quilt with a panel similar to this.  I fell in love with the concept, and later found some great paper pieced trees that I thought would work well.  The border added the finishing touch with a three tree panel on each side.

This is Andi's quilt, big enough for her king size bed!

Frogs

For Alexis on her 3rd birthday, the one she shared with her grandpa.  Hard to believe she turned 7 yesterday.

For a while, every time she would come visit Grammy she would request another pillow,  She helped design them, eventually moving on to belts, skirts and more.  She would direct the effort as I did the work!
