Mission San Fernando Rey de España

Mission San Fernando Rey de España was founded on Sept. 8, 1797, by Franciscan Friar Fermin Lasuen.  It was the seventeenth mission in the system filling a gap between San Buenaventura and San Gabriel.  The day I visited there was a Paladin  impersonator taking pictures in rooms where Have Gun Will Travel scenes had been filmed.

Much of the mission was intact with some really great exhibits through out.  From baskets and pottery of the indigenous people to a great wine cellar and  carpenter and blacksmith shops.  The  include a memorial to Bob Hope who was a great supporter of the mission.  His buried here with members of his family.

CSHP - Old town San Diego

A visit to San Diego Old Town State Park, after Kailee's wedding in October, was perfect timing for viewing all the Day of the Dead decorations.

There are a number of old buildings and museums to visit, but be forewarned if you expect to eat there is little but Mexican food.

When Sean and Nikki got married in 1998 the family all stayed in old town....so this  was my second visit.

SB - Carpenteria

Carpenteria State Beach is twelve miles south of Santa Barbara.  It's name came from the Portola Exploration of 1769, when members of the expedition named it La Carpenteria, the Carpenter Shop, because the Tomol canoes being constructed by the local Chumash peoples.  The beach is known for it's tidepools, surf fishing, terraced bluffs, dunes and swimming opportunities.

Oh Christmas Tree and the Snowman

I like to work on Christmas projects during December, so this quilt was mainly done in 2023. It  is now hung on my chair to keep me warm this Christmas season and Christmas Pinwheels has moved to the guest chair.

The snowman pillow is a perfect addition for cuddling up with a good book or watching a sappy Christmas movie.

Leftovers from quilt backs and Christmas Pajamas.  This has been my go to chair companion for many Decembers.

Mission Santa Inés

Santa Ines (Saint Agnes) was named for a young girl who chose not to marry and instead choose to devote herself to Christ. The legend says that she was forced into prostitution and subsequently beheaded for her religious beliefs in 304.

Construction of the mission began in 1804 and building continued adding the sides to the quadrangle.  By 1812 there were 718 Chumash residents as well as the friars and soldiers.  The mission church was rebuilt in 1871 and restored in 2021.  The picture here shows part of an original arch.

The history on the Old Mission website talks about the difficulties as the Mexican War for independence from Spain was fought.  Supplies and pay for the soldiers was no longer received and the Missions themselves were forced to provide support receiving on vouchers in return.  A Chumash rebellion in 1824 was over within a week at Santa Ines, more because the people loved and respected the Friars than because the soldiers won.

SP - Gaviota

It's a little off the beaten path, but I fell in love with this beach.  The bridge and the pier of pelicans and cormorants were unique!!
